Mateo Grela

Passion For Patagonia

Mateo Grela is one of the lodge’s assistant guides and fly fishing guides, bringing youthful energy, passion, and a deep connection to Patagonia’s waters. Born in Buenos Aires in 2005, Mateo moved with his family to Lago Puelo when he was three years old and grew up surrounded by rivers, mountains, and nature.

Fly fishing has been a central part of his life since the age of seven and quickly became his greatest passion. Whether spending time on the water with friends or enjoying the solitude of a quiet river, Mateo has always felt most at home outdoors. One of his favorite places to fish is Los Alerces National Park, where he especially enjoys the incredible variety of fishing opportunities, from dry flies and nymphs to streamer fishing in some of Patagonia’s most spectacular landscapes.

Mateo has been working as a fishing guide for the past three years and has spent the last two seasons with Argentina Waters as both an assistant guide and guide. What he loves most about guiding is sharing the excitement, adrenaline, and joy of fly fishing with guests while exploring the beauty and wildlife of Patagonia. For Mateo, guiding is far more than a job — it is a passion he genuinely enjoys sharing with every person who visits the lodge.

Outside of fishing, Mateo enjoys playing soccer, tying flies, and traveling with his family. And after a long day on the river, nothing makes him happier than a good milanesa with French fries.

Guests appreciate Mateo’s enthusiasm, positive attitude, and authentic love for being on the water.
